Visitors can take advantage of seven educational sessions beginning hourly during the show from 11 AM. The schedule of sessions will be posted at The Creative Alliance Theater and is also available online in English and German. “We are delighted to have the sponsorship of The Creative Alliance member companies in bringing together well-known photo professionals and experts for these inspirational and informative sessions at photokina,” said Robin Preston,  “The support of Adobe, Hewlett-Packard, Nikon, Nik Software, Wacom and X-Rite has made this first-class program possible, along with support from photokina show organizers and Koelnmesse.  Topics range from image capture to print and marketing, all of which are important aspects of the professional photography business.  In these sessions, professional photographers will learn about important technical trends, how to achieve stunning results using advanced techniques, and how to market their businesses in today’s fast-paced world.” Preston is acting as the Creative Director for The Creative Alliance at photokina and will also be Master of Ceremonies (MC) for the event.

Working professional photographers will not want to miss the opportunity to be inspired by some of the most recognized experts in the industry. In addition, experts will be available for evening discussion groups in a more intimate setting that will allow one-on-one interaction and better address the informational and technology questions of individual attendees.

-      “The new partnership with the Creative Alliance will be a terrific asset to photokina and its visitors,” said Oliver P. Kuhrt, Executive Vice President of the Koelnmesse GmbH. “Together we can offer visitors a comprehensive and high-class program on all six days of the show that addresses important technical trends affecting the profession. Walk a Mile – Join the 1% Club

From John Paul Caponigro’s blog

Want to feel like you have a National Park all to yourself? Join the 1% club. Rangers say less than 1% of visitors walk more than a mile. This can make a big difference when you’re photographing. For instance, when you’re photographing sand dunes, near parking lots and trail heads you’ll see more footprints than wave patterns, but one mile out, you won’t see a single footprint. So if you’re seeking solitude and pristine nature, walk a mile.

Print Aesthetics

From John Paul Caponigro’s Blog

What do people look for in fine art photographic prints?
One of the most important things we look for is …

What kind of detail?
At least five kinds.
Detail – Focus
Detail – Dynamic Range
Detail – Gradation
Detail – Low Signal to Noise Ratio
Detail – Flawless Surfaces

There’s are many exceptions to this rule of thumb but they are exceptions.
The best exceptions depart from the standards meaningfully.
It helps to know what to look for in fine art photographs.

FADP Highlight – Special Guest – Chris Orwig

From John Paul Caponigro’s Blog

Chris Orwig shared many insights in an inspiring lecture during our FADP workshop at Brooks. Chris collects great stories from photographers and shares them in his new book Visual Poetry.

In one story, a man has written a novel and decides it’s no good so he throws it out. As she’s taking out the trash, his wife discovers the manuscript and reads it. She goes to him and says he needs to finish it – it’s good. He does. It becomes a best seller.

Chris thinks we all need ‘trash can buddies’. I agree.
